It is often said that a good model makes for a good photographer, and this is no more the case than with Julie Healy. Australian born and bred, Healy came to prominence in 1996, emerging as a favorite with Australia’s leading designers and appearing in the pages of top titles including Vogue Australia and Harpers Bazaar before hitting the international circuit and the premier fashion capitals of New York, Milan, Paris and London. With a work life spent largely in front of the camera, Healy used her ‘down time’ behind it, exploring the realms of photography when film was still the norm. Reportage style - which saw her shoot literally whatever caught her eye - eventually gave way to more stylized set ups as she convinced her friends and fellow models to ‘test’. It was here that Healy began to understand the nuances of shadow and light, of “capturing the moment”, and “working the pose”. Not surprisingly it is the masters of photography’s chiaroscuro effects who most inspire her…Richard Avedon, Lillian Bassman and Paulo Roversi to name a few. Inspired by the world of cinema, Julie’s photographs evoke a sense of drama. “As a child I was obsessed with Alfred Hitchcock’s, Rebecca. Not so much the performances but the photography…the lighting, and this was before I even understood there were specialists who created the mesmerizing effects, and the acute craft behind it”
With more than 20 years experience in the industry working with many of the world’s leading artists Julie is now living her dream life as a photographer. Passionate about beauty and fashion, exploring the magic of still and motion formats, Julie also loves shooting portraits and working with creative’s to make 'the dream concept' a reality.
